Slow Internet Connection Sharing

I have been dealing with a few problems with a very slow computers and
Hughesnet. I have two computers in a location that does not have any other
option than Hughesnet Satellite for “high speed†internet. The computer that
is connected to Hughesnet’s equipment is slow accessing and using the
internet but it is useable. The second computer accesses the internet via
Microsoft’s internet connection sharing. Under most circumstances the second
computer is so slow that it almost unseable. I have contacted hugesnet and
all I get for support is that they check the speed on the computer connected
to their equipment and determine that they get a certain amount of signal and
have determined that it is working properly. As a last resort we tried to
Reset Internet Explorer Setting. The computer now will not access the
internet at all. When you launch IE7 it tries to get to Microsoft’s IE7 set
up site but the computer is so slow that it times out and will not let me
change the home page on anything else until it runs the one time set up.

Hi Kevin,

Did you run an anti-virus scan? You have not mentioned any Router being
used. Do you have a Router and have you reset the Router and restored its
settings?

Antivirus is and was up to date and runs a full scan every night on both
computers. One computer is connected directly to the Hughesnet hardware via
usb and has a nic connected to a Lan. On the lan is another computer that
uses Internet Connection Sharing to access the internet. I am experianceing
some issues on the computer connected directly to the Hughesnet like I can go
to www.hotmail.com but I can’t long in. I can go to Comcast and long into my
webmail. I have tried to long on to MS Messanger to establish a remote
control session but Messanger times out. When I run the troubleshooting
wizard it tells me there is something wrong with the gateway. I contacted
Hugesnet and was assured that the gateway was configured properly because I
could get to other internet sites.

Sorry for the confusion. Internet connection is Hughesnet (direcway). I
have an email account w/ Comcast that I used to test the system. I was not
able to log in to hotmail so I used my Comcast webmail as a test and I was
able to log in. Originally I thought it might be a https issue but I was
able to log into a bank website.

I have been struggling with this issue for a few months. When I first
started working on it I updated the MS Messanger so I think it is the lastest
version, if not is it one version back so I don’t think that is an issue. I
have tried to use it on three different computers on that network w/ out
successes.

I have a Comcast for my home internet that is how I have a Comcast account.
I just used the Comcast email account to test the system to see if it the
problem was a hotmail problem or an internet email problem.

I am able to get to the log on screen for hotmail and put in my user name
and password but it will not let me long in.

I have taken one of the computers from the location that I am having the
problem and put it on another network and I am able to long in the hotmail
and Messenger. I believe it is a Hughesnet (direcway) problem but I can not
get any support from them. I was hopping to find someone on this forum that
has run into a similar problem that could point me in the correct direction.

Hi Kevin,

From home, can you log into Hotmail and Messenger? Do you have a Laptop
computer, that you can use at home and make sure you can use Messenger and
Hotmail at home? Then take it to work and without making any changes, test
the connection.

Is the Router involved with Hughesnet? Can you do a Factory Reset on
that router, then log into the Router's settings to restore the Router's
settings you were using, using a Wired Computer, to restore the settings for
the Wireless Internet?

I have already preformed those troubleshooting steps.

This is the set up:

Two Computer in a on a home network. One computer connected directly to the
Hughesnet (dirceway) modem via USB. This computer also has a NIC card that
is connected to local network that has a switch (no router). There is a
second computer connected network that accesses the internet via Microsoft’s
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

I can get to hotmail.com from the computer connected directly to Hughesnet
modem but can NOT LOG IN so the hotmail problem is on the computer connected
directly to the modem (no router).

A second issue is that all internet access is slow. The computer connected
directly to the modem is slow but useable. The second computer that uses ICS
is so slow it is unusable (websites time out). In trouble shooting the slow
issue I have taken a laptop and plugged it in where the second computer is
and receive the same results. I get good ping time response to the first
computer but anything outside the local network is very high ping time
response. From my office network I can ping google.com and receive about
36ms when I ping it from the home network I receive about 875ms response
time.

I have also taken the second computer to the office and put it on another
network and it is able to connect to Hotmail.com and MSMessenger and internet
access is normal.

Thank you for your help this is a complicated problem

Hi Kevin,

I do not use Microsoft's ICS, because I am on a Wireless System at home
using a Wireless Router, that is wired directly to my Cable Modem.

I think the only way that will work, is to employ the use of a Wireless
Router between the Modem and Computer.

Get a Wireless Nic Card for the Laptop. It doesn't need to be expensive,
unless you need the speed.

Considering the primary problem is slow internet on the computer connected
directly to the Hughesnet I spent about 4 hours troubleshooting with
Hughesnet Support. Hughesnet has an internet speed test on their website.
When I first tested the speed it was running about 119 to 123 kbs after
reinstalling all Hughesnet connection related software the speed was up to
about 750 to 800 kbs. I did not notice a tremendous speed difference in
browsing and the ping test remained the same before and after the
reinstallation ( about 800 ms to ping google.com). The suggestion from
Hughesnet was to upgrade to their latest modem with a cost of about $200 or a
15 month contract. The second computer (the one using ICS) is still very,
very slow.

Thanks for you input and I will take your suggestion to try the wireless
option when we get the primary internet issue resolved. Thanks again for
your help.

This is my experience: For the longest time I had a very similar problem
trying to access my hotmail. I also tried just about all the troubleshooting
remedies I could find...all to no avail. Frustrating. Finally, I decided to
use a different web brower. I was using Internet Explorer 7 for my hotmail
sessions and login and/or accessing an email message would be so slow or
timeout all together. I use Mozilla Firefox 2 to check my hotmail now...and
it's lightening fast...they way it should be.

This sounds like a possible work around thanks for your input. Now that you
have pointed out the IE7 issue the system did appear to get slower after the
upgrade. It has always been very slow but appears to have gotten worse about
the time IE7 cane out. Hughes net has a new modem out so I think we are
going to try that first because it is the only option they have.
