Slow document opening when LAN enabled

Documents of all types open very slowly ( 5-6 seconds ) when the LAN is
enabled. When disabled they open instantly.
I have tried another LAN card/cable disabling the one on board - no luck.
I have even tried another LAN - have also stopped all services starting up
in msconfig.
AV and firewall have been disabled - still the same.
Nothing appears to be using CPU time and there is plenty of available memory.
LAN usage is at a minumum when viewed through task manager.
I am at a loss now - please can anyone help quickly ??

thanks for the post - unfortunately it is occurring on all local documents.
I have had to rebuild the PC - that has fixed it !
