Slow to open text file while LAN connected

If I have LAN cable connected, the PC takes like 2 minutes to open a text
file or word document. But as soon as I remove the LAN cable, the text file
or word opens almost instantly. Does anyone know why and how can I fix this
problem?
Help will be much appreciated. Thanks

I forgot to mention, regardless whether the LAN is working or not. As soon
as I connect the LAN cable the problem starts. And it's not limited to only
Word document but any of the Microsoft Office including excel, powerpoint etc.
 
Do you have any shares mapped to other workstations? If so removing them
might help.
