I have a new install of XP pretty much configured the same as an older
laptop. The problem is when looking at network directories with a
large number of files, it is horribly slow. The new system seems to
be creating thumbnails even though I am in detail view. It takes 2-3
seconds to pull the scroll bar down for 1200 files. The laptop does
not exhibit this behavior. If I put the laptop in thumbnail view, it
acts the same as the new system as it creates the thumbnails. Once
through a directory, then the scroll bar moves normally. The new
system acts the same in detail and thumbnail view.
On the new system, in detail view, there is a large amount of network
activity as seen in task manager. No such activity on the laptop
unless in thumbnail view.
This activity is the same in all programs when using 'open' or 'save
as'.
I've tried setting thumbnail caching on and off in explorer-tools.
I've tweaked the registry per a couple of group posts. I've burned
incense. Nothing helps.
Anybody seen this before?
One post suggested a background Photoshop 6 thumbnail viewer was at
work but I'm running CS and that doesn't seem to be the problem.
No virus that I can find. Network performance seems equivelent
between the two systems.
One hint might be that on the new system, icons show for the files
such as Autocad. The laptop only shows generic file icons even though
it knows to open .dwg files in Autocad.
I filled a directory with a bunch of files with no extensions and it
seems I can scroll normally. Same files with .dwg and the problem
comes back.
So it would appear the problem is related to explorer creating
thumbnails even though I don't use them. What's different between
this system and the laptop? How do I turn this off?
Thanks,
