Slipstream Install Problem on VIA C3 CPU

M

Michael Steiner

Hi everybody,

hopefully I'm gonna find some help/advice here, I've already posted to
various other groups before including the german groups here,
unfortunately without success.

My system: Soyo VBA133U Board, latest BIOS, equipped with a VIA C3 CPU
Ezra-T, running at 800 MHz; 1.5 GB RAM Infineon (3x512 MB)

There are only two more pieces of hardware: an ATI Rage Pro 128 graphic
card and a Fujitsu 80 GB HDD.

This system has been working wonderfully for about two years with
Windows XP Professional SP1 and Debian Linux, never experienced any
problems.

Now, with the advent of SP2, I've created a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD for a
clean installation of Windows.

The whole installation process works as usual, until, after the second
reboot, the black screen with the Windows-logo and the text "Please
wait..." appears. At this point the mouse pointer (USB) freezes and
nothing happens any more. Only a hard reset awakens my system again.

I've absolutely carefully followed the instructions for SP2 Slipstream
install, and I've even taken two different original CD-ROMs and two
different downloaded SP2-network installation packages for creating two
absolutely independent SP2-install cds ... without success.

After that I've re-installed Windows XP SP1 (also slipstreamed about two
years ago) without problems (!), then tried to apply SP2 on this fresh
system. After the reboot, the system hangs again at the same point!

I have no idea what else to do: I've removed all but one memory module
and changed them against each other, no success.

I've set all BIOS settings to default values, no success.

Has anybody an idea whether VIA C3-CPUs are known to cause problems with
SP2? Any solutions?

Thanks for reading this, and I appreciate any attempts for help!

Yours, Michael

This behavior can occur if Legacy USB support is enabled in your computer's BIOS.
This option does not need to be used on Windows XP-based computers.

Hi Carey,
This behavior can occur if Legacy USB support is enabled in your computer's BIOS.
This option does not need to be used on Windows XP-based computers.

unfortunately, this behaviour has only been recognized on Intel-based
chipsets ... the Soyo-board is VIA-based, and there's no "Legacy USB
support" option in the BIOS either.

Nevertheless, I disabled USB support just to try.

In addition to that I remembered a little trick from the beginnings of
Win2k/Win XP: on the first boot, there is the option of pressing [F5] in
order to disable ACPI-support in the installation process.

Let's see if "Standard PC"-support is better ...

If you chose "Standard PC", you may encounter this issue:

"It is Now Safe to Turn Off Your Computer" error message when you try to shut down your computer

Have you installed the latest BIOS update?

Have you installed the latest BIOS update?

Unfortunately, even "Standard PC" didn't bring the solution: the install
process still hangs at the same point.

Yeah, BIOS is updated to the latest available revision. Any more ideas?
I'm about to resign ... :-(

Try using PS/2 adapters for your mouse and keyboard.

Try using PS/2 adapters for your mouse and keyboard.

My keyboard is PS/2, and I had plugged out my mouse for the last few
installation attempts ... so this won't work either :-(

I've also tried another graphic board (GeForce 2 MX) now, and it won't
change a bit :-(

Any more help is still greatly appreciated ...
