I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to remember
that it was a question on the 2000 censes for the United States, so
you might check there.

My first response: If one is too dazed and confused to already know the
sources for those answers, then one is too dazed and confused to handle
the information!

My Second response: Page 254 of the Encyclopaedia Britannica ALMANAC
2003 has the info, as does their 'Great web sites' pages 255-256.

My third response: http://google.com

My fourth response: Whatever data you get, must be doubled, for we have
all purchased new, 2X to 6X faster systems, since the census of 2000,
and the majority of us have learned to network, and, over half of us are
now on Broadband, sharing our systems with our children, grandkids, and
other friends and relatives... I have managed to accumulate 47
computers, and am building a Beowulf Cluster, that runs Cluster Knoppix,
http://knopper.net/knoppix

My fifth response: As of 2001, USA 178,000,000 computers in homes.
498,366,000 in the world. (Brit. Almanac 2003)
