Slave not recognised after re-install

Before re-installing 'xp' i backed up a lot of data on a Slave Drive (D) ,
(C) is my System HDD,

Right, i took out the 'ide' cable and power to the Slave, and reformatted
and reinstalled XP on C: .. After i installed 'xp' i then connected the
Slave Drive, as i have done many times before, except..
1. It was not in Windows Explorer, C: was there, of course, and E: was
there, (my DVD drive)
2. In Computer Management Console, the Slave drive was there, but it was
labelled as 'Unallocated Space'
3. During boot up, my PC recognises that there are 2 HD's as it asks me to
press F1 to save the changes
4. The Slave drive is 10 gig, and on 1 boot up, it was labelled as 254,000mb
on the 'press F1 to save changes' screen ?

I darent do anything like, 'initialise' the HD in the Computer management
console, just in case i wipe whatever data might be left on the hard drive,
Can someone please tell me why this Reinstallation has gone a bit Pear
shaped, as ive done nothing different to the 5 or 6 other times ive
reinstalled and saved stuff to the Slave prior to Reinstalling 'xp'

Thanks a lot - Fred C

Compaq Deskpro 650mhz, running 'xp pro' no sp2 , Maxtor 80 gig hdd, and
slave is maxtor 10gig

The Slave hard drive is in device manager when i go to control
options/system/device manager ??

No shorts in the ide cable?
All jumpers are set correctly?
All connections good and proper?
What file systems are on each drive?
What programs were used to create file systems (fdisk, partition magic,
etc...)

I used maxblast to format and partition HD, but the backed-up Slave was not
connected during the installation.
Both hd's are NTFS in fact, i was using the slave hd, not 5 mins before i
reinstalled, The 1 thing i am beginning to wonder about is that, while my
tower case was off, the jumper dipswitch settings are near the hdd
slot/case, i have a compaq deskpro 650mhz ep/sb mobo (041ch) and there are
6 switches, I have googled these in the past but i have NO IDEA where they
are meant to be positioned, they are..if '1' is 'up'

they are 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 the 2 outside positions signify something
other than what the inside 4 are there for, thats all i know.. in fact, 2
weeks ago, i moved 1 of these switches '?, dunno which 1, cos i thought it
might make my pc stop blue-screening, which it hasn't done for a year., also
'cos my PC was slow as hell,

i can only answer 'i think so ' to the above questions, but the dipswitches
might have been wrong, this is the 1st reinstall thats not just allowed me
to connect the slave and copy everything i saved to it, Back to my C: Drive.

Thanks for your help, any knowledge of jumper settings? - Fred C

I have found it is better to wipe the system drive before installation.
Then
partition and format with M$ software (fdisk, format). It seems to work
better that way.

Changing something without knowing what you are doing can be
dangerous (shorts, corruptions etc....) You may have caused the
problem unknowingly.

You could have changed a setting like hard drive size limitation or
speed of the hd connection. Without the manual, who knows.
Did you document the switch settings BEFORE you changed them?

Not really, have you tried Compaqs' knowledge base? I would have
started with google also. Since that didn't help, try Compaq. Problem
is the computer is pretty old. In the future use Brand/Model/SN in
your searches and here in the ng. That way we don't have to keep
asking.

Is the drive showing up in the BIOS?
Windows can't see the drive unless it is showing correctly in the BIOS.

yes, it was ... ive sorted it, it was the IDE cable, it won't work with a
dual connection for master and slave, only a master, But thanks anyway .
