new hard drive not recognized in Windows Explorer

System: MB: ASUS PL266, CPU: AMD 1800+, XP home edition, Hard Drives:
IBM 80 gb (master), Western Digital 120 gb (slave), Plextor CD RW

I removed my slave 6 gig hard drive (partitioned: c,d,e) and installed a
western digital ata/100 120 gig. The WD is configured as a slave on the
primary IDE connector. The Master drive is an IBM 80 gb (partitioned:
G,H,I) with XP installed on G. The Plextor is assigned drive F.

(note: I did not uninstall the 6 gig drive before removing it)

Things that I have done:

Checked system BIOS and the new drive is recognized as slave on the
primary IDE connector. Checked on Control Panel "Add New Hardware" and
the new drive shows up and is functioning normally. Also in Device
Manager the WD drive shows up as slave..

Question: how do I format the drive and assign a Vol. label to it???

Thought maybe that I would have to use the installation CD to do this..
but do not want to reinstall XP..

Appreciate any and all inputs..

Thanks

You can boot to xp cd,repair, type:DiskPart, youre drive should show
select create partition,esc,then type:FORMAT E: /FS:ntf
E: being the hd,typing:HELP on either screen gets info.If it doesn
show in DiskPart,type:list disk
The cmd work in cmd prompt as well, until the drive is in service with explore
the its in read only.
