Signing in to hotmail with messenger

Guest

I have just gotten a new computer. I use outlook for my work email account,
but have previously used messenger to take me directly to hotmail to do my
personal emails. I've just downloaded windows messenger and when I try to
sign in it takes me to outlook. How can I sign in directly to hotmail with
messeger?

This happens automatically when you sign into Messenger with a valid Hotmail
accout. All other sign-in accounts will open the default mail application.

Note that Messenger has its own newsgroups.

Thank you for the response, but that wasn't the case on my last computer.
Maybe messenger was an older version. The problem is that I want to keep
Outlook as my default mail application, but don't want to use Outlook for my
hotmail account. Is there a way to go directly into hotmail like there used
to be?

I didn't say that you had to. I said that the sign-in account for Messenger
has to be a Hotmail address. You can obtain the latest version here;

OK, I guess we're not communicating. Let me try again. I have downloaded
the latest version of messenger. I have set up my hotmail address as a sign
in account. When I click sign in in messenger, my computer opens outlook. I
do not want to change the default mail handler, so is there another way to
click on "sign in" in messenger and not have it open up Outlook?

You're still off-topic here.

Anyway;
Are you using Windows Messenger or are you using Windows Live Messenger?
Choose Help-> About to see your exact version.

What "sign-in" are you referring to? Sign-in will connect you to the
Messenger network and once logged it you'll see your buddy-list. At what
time does Outlook come into play? Clicking the Envelope button in Windows
Live Messenger will take you to you Hotmail account when you are logged in
with a Hotmail account. You default mail application doesn't have to do
anything with this.

I have Windows Messenger. When I sign in, my buddy list does in fact come
up. At that point, I can either click on file, my email inbox, or I can
click on the little bubble people on my bottom tool box and click on my email
inbox. Regardless of which one I do, when I click on my email inbox, Outlook
opens up.

Yesterday I tried changing my default mail handler under settings, control
panel, internet settings, programs. I changed the default from Outlook to
Windows Live mail. That solves the problem I'm writing about, ie. once this
default is changed, when I click on my email inbox, Outlook does not open and
I am taken directly into my hotmail account.

My issue is that I was trying to find a solution without changing my mail
default, because I prefer it to be Outlook.

In that case use Windows Live Messenger. AFAIK; Windows Messenger and MSN
Messenger won't be updated anymore and have been combined (and extended
beyond that) into one product called Windows Live Messenger.
