signing in but never connects

Windows XP hom

I click on "sign in", I hear it dialing.... then it says attemping 1, attempting 2, etc... and then never goes to any internet page...there is some kind of message that says it's having a problem with the connection yet it says "connected" on the open programs list. What's going on

I have to use someone else's computer since I can't get on mine to check for help. Thanks
