sign on shows unread mail and outlook does not

Why does the sign on screen for windows show I have 2 unread mail messages
against my signon, yet when I start Outlook I find that there are none in my
folders? If I then do a send/receive the number of messages received bears
no relation to the number notified on the sign on so they are not messages on
my remote mail server.

The way it works makes the signon info a little meaningless. In my instance
I think I'll block it.
