The 28th of April was the day and it came and went, the morning started out really lovely and sunny but by 11:00am it had clouded over and the wind became blustery to 30mph and biting cold which marred an otherwise really good day out..

The Edwardian flying machines were grounded which meant we were not going to get to see them fly, which was a disappointment as was looking forward to this part of the airshow..:(

But looking around the museums was fantastic and every machine or aircraft there regularly flies, so they are not just museum pieces that never move...
They also have collections of vehicles and motorcycles too infact this guy Shuttleworth collected what seemed to be almost anything he could lay his hands on  quite extraordinary.

If you get the chance to go then don't hesitate as its a brilliant day out and has got to be the largest collection of WW1 and pre WW1 aircraft and Edwardian flying machines I have ever seen

Thought I would post a few piccies...Enjoy :D
It would only allow me to post 20 attachments..;)

Great pix! I love all that stuff, especially liked the motorcycle pix :) Wouldn't mind going there meself.

I noticed all the oil drip trays, that's old engines for you ;)

I think you may be able to post more pix if you make another post.

What camera took those pix?

Super pix CL - those old aircraft, cars and motorcycles have such a lot of character. Imho, they make some of today's vehicles look rather bland. Wonderful to think they are all still able to be flown/driven too. Thanks for sharing :D

The reason for all the oil drip trays is because every aircraft in there flies on a regular basis, so maintenance and oil spills are a constant thing going on in the hangars, thats what the mechanics said when we were talking to them when they were moving the aircraft from inside to outside, yes you are also correct Mr Flopp's as old engines also drip oil too, but so do new engines..

Lots of motorcycles there quite a few were being rode and exhibited outside so didn't get as many pics as I wanted of them, by the time we went outside some had been brought back in, the same with some of the aircraft that had already displayed

There was also a bird of prey centre in the grounds and entry to that was also part of our ticket as we went on a Coach trip and the price we paid was all in, I think the ticket price on the gate on the day was £20 for an adult and children go free, so a pretty good day out for a family.:thumb:

Camera is me trusty Panny FZ7 with Leica lens and 16X zoom, I know the camera inside out as owned it since 2007 and know all the settings and how to get the best out of it in most conditions, as you can see it takes a fair pic! :D

My Pics website has quite a few from the Panny on there, take a look-see http://crazylegswebsite.weebly.com/

Mr Flopp's they even have a licensed bar there

We enjoyed that video enormously. It was great to be able to see the planes in flight, they really put on a good show.

The "English Electric" plane was a really unusual-looking specimen; so low to the ground... did they ever manage to get it airborne I wonder..?

Super thread, thanks for posting the vid CL :D

This type of museum is great. Love all the old stuff. :thumb:

Last weekend went to Beamish Museum in County Durham. Lots of old machinery, steam engines, railway engines, including a working replica of the Rocket, trams buses, old restored buildings and shops, a coal mine which can be entered etc.

A full day out with lunch in the 19th century Tearooms or pub. :)

Duxford is just about 20 miles away from me, I'm going this year too at some point as want to see the Vulcan XH558 as its probably going to be its swansong this year, hoping to see it at Duxford, Clacton and Eastbourne over the cliffs..Still waiting on prelimanary dates though.

Just think of the advance of aircraft between1909 and 1918 the crossing of the atlantic in an old bomber and then the jump to jet aircraft to Space travel and it all happened in 100 years. Man advanced so much in the 20th Century. Fantastic, probably more advance in science and engineering than any other.century.

I shall, It'll be this years before i do though knowing me! lol

Yes we went last year on the Saturday, it was the Vucans flight, was that or the Red Arrows on the Sunday.

Beachy Head? They fly past there, that would be a great place to see it from! :)

E: yeah here you go...

I've had my fill of Air Shows, however, I got a titbit for you on the "peoples favorite Vulcan" ...

The initial colour for in service Vulcan aircraft was white anti flash.

By 1964, the V-force ... Valiant, Victor & Vulcan ... was moving to low level operations and the camouflage paint scheme began to be applied. The initial scheme was a camouflaged top with white retained for the lower surface and black for the radome.

Over the years, the paint scheme evolved to an overall camouflage with the roundals losing the middle white. Minor differences could be detected with different roles aircraft as to whether high gloss to dull paint was applied.

Might go photo Southport's Air Show for yous all ...

... naw. :)

I too went to the Eastbourne Airshow last year.
And when the Vulcan was doing circuits over Beachy Head before displaying everyone in the crowd was looking to the right to watch it, even the announcer said it would be arriving soon as another display was flying at the time!

And once the Vulcan left so did half the crowd it was that much of a crowd please'er.

I have a good collection of the vintage era of jet flight mostly from the late 40's u to the 70's including the the V Bombers and other jets like the TSR2 which is a story in it's self!

Nice photos by the way.

Cheers Feckit

Yes its amazing what pulling power the Vulcan has, at one of the airshows I attended a couple a years ago everyone was waiting for the Vulcan and after it had displayed half the crowd left, which is a disappointment really but just shows the pulling power of the aircraft, its the reason I have to see it this year as its probably going to be the last time..
Can't help thinking airshow attendances will suffer greatly once they retire it and could lead to certain displays giving up due to the financial problems it could cause..Hope not though but think they may have to replace her with something else to draw the crowds, maybe even bring displays from overseas like the Blue Angels over to display more frequently..

Thanks for the comments folks..
