Shutdown problems

This is my last attempt at this, the other posts I made will not show and
I'm sorry if they all appear elsewhere.
Edited from previous posts because the other programs have been uninstalled
that were mentioned in them.

Now on to the next problem and hopefully any answer will fix it once and
for all. My computer reboots frequently, runs thru the diskcheck, brings up
the Fatal Error Shutdown/Report to Microsoft window, and says its
unidentified after reporting.

What I am wondering, is if I use the System Restore, will it put me back to
square one before any software installs and remove any reg entries?
Or
Would I be better off removing all software with the hopes they remove reg
entries as well for a clean reinstall?
Or
Am I better off just wiping the disk clean (reformat) and starting from
scratch, OS and all?

Try a system restore. If not, wipe the drive clean and start over.

Brian,
Let me guess...you just installed XP! I have been having
the same problem with the program Roxio Easy CD Creator.
I can't uninstall, reinstall,then uninstall....nothing!
The only temporary solution I have found is to go out to
the internet and find a fix for the particular programs
you are having problems with, download them, and see if
that doesn't help. I have found no good way to re-format
my hard drive either. I just got my hands on a boot disk
and I am goint to try and reformat from that.

Good luck to you and let me know if you find anything
out. By the way, aren't the Microsoft techs supposed to
be answering these questions? I have seen no responses.

Hi, i'm having similar probs, except that my pc reboots
itself after the first startup after a short period of
time and then works fine... It may happen when i'm
viewing a video, playiny music, using internet explorer
or simply just clicking through my folders! I formatted
my pc, reinstalled windows xp and installed only
necessary drivers, mainboard, graphics card, etc and i'm
still having the prob... the id for the errror is 1003,
system error but there is no additional info. Anyone who
has past exp and solutions can you pls post or mail me?
BTW i'm using a MSI mainboard, hercules radeon 9600 and
onboard sound.

Brian,
Let me guess...you just installed XP! I have been having
the same problem with the program Roxio Easy CD Creator.

There was a problem with early versions of EZCD 5.
The easist thing to do might be to uninstall EZCD (and InCD) and
see if that solves the problem.
If it does, get a later version of EZCD (or do what I did -
switch to Nero).

I can't uninstall, reinstall,then uninstall....nothing!

This is what I have done so far, and as of this moment, no probelms.

Ran repair from the XP CD
During repair, when it came to install SoundMax it mentioned there might be
a problem if I continue to load/use it. I did not load it.
Once rebooted to Windows, reloaded updated integrated chip graphics
drivers.
All is well, and no more frequent restarts from the computer.

So that leads me to looking at the SoundMax 4 XL Drivers as being the
problem drivers. They are still uninstalled at this moment. As soon as I get
all the updates downloaded for this new machine, from the BIOS on up thru
all integrated drivers, I will systematically install each and see if a new
problem occurs. The SoundMax will be loaded last.

So for those wondering, as of now, SoundMax is a problem with XP Pro, at
least for me.

BTW, I have no burning software installed as of yet, so they are out of the
question when it comes to this problem on this computer.

All updates installed, SoundMax last, no problems. Keeping my fingers and
toes crossed!
