SHUTDOWN PROBLEM

etq

After XP sp3 update, which was successful, I noticed that the shutdown hanged
on explorer and power meter. These programs had to be ended before XP would
shut down. I have a Dell Latititude D620. I am up to date with the windows
updates. Please advise what can be done to remove this shutdown problem.
Thanks ETQ

if the power meter
is a dell add-on to
windows,

then you may have
to reinstall it or see
if there is an updated
meter from dell.

+1 on dbBen's suggestion. Download the power meter install from Dell and
reinstall it. Compaq notebooks were notorious for losing their power
settings after an OS update and had to have the power meter reinstalled each
time. I used to keep the install on floppy just for that purpose when
someone at work had a problem with it. The Compaq's would either hang at
shutdown, or just restart instead of powering off.

Thanks Tom and Gerry forn your suggestions
I removed the Dell power meter, dell quickset and reinstalled with the
latest version from the dell support site, however the problem still remains.
I think its hanging on the microsoft power meter.
As for the UPHClean - that didnot work either.
Any other suggestions as to what could be causing this?
Thanks etq

Another thought is to look at what is using explorer.exe immediate
before you initiate shutdown. You can use Process Explorer for this
task.

What is the image name of the process producing high CPU usage? With
Explorer you will see the "children", those further down the tree. This
could help narrow down the source of the unexplained CPU usage.

Download Process Explorer.
For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

It would be helpful if you could post the Command Line of the process
generating the excessive CPU usage. In Process Explorer place
cursor on Process and select Properties, Image.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Hope this helps.
