After I installed some windows non critical updates, I could not shutdown the
computer or open task manager. I have WinXP Media Center SP3.I have a Sony
VGC-RB62G with 2 gigs of memory.I have AVG,Zonealarm and Spy Sweeper
installed.I have to shut down the computer with the power button. After the
computer restarted, I could shutdown the computer the regular way. What do
you think happened?

1. From where did you copy/paste that text (e.g.,
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)?
You have not yet installed updates from this website or by turning on
automatic updating on your computer.

2. Can you explain the above? Is Automatic Updates not enabled?

3. Open %windir%\debug\mrt.log <=this file (typically in C:\Windows\debug
<=this folder) | Scroll to the very bottom | Copy the entire section
starting with the line "Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
v2.4, November 2008" to your clipboard | Paste the contents of your
clipboard into a reply to this post.

EXAMPLE:

4. Does this behavior persist if you do a driver roll-back?

2. My automatic updates are enabled.

3. I downloaded Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and ran it.
No infections were found.

4.I did not do a driver roll back because my computer can shut down and
restart. I think Webroot Spy Sweeper is the problem.

Thanks for your help. I plan to let Spy Sweeper expire in 10 days.

Thank you.

Should you choose to purchase Spysweeper or renew your subscription, be sure
to disable *all* Spywaresweeper Guards before installing any Windows
Updates, any updates for other applications, and/or when
installing/uninstalling anything.
