I am getting an error when I shutdown or restart xp pro.

DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

It tells me to uninstall any recently installed software, but the only
things I have installed recently are windows updates and an update for
msn messenger. I had recently had an accident where I accidentally
unplugged the the power cable while the compy was on. I had to unplug
the cable from the surge protector to get the thing restarte, and then
all this happened. I also get this technical info:

STOP: 0X0000009F(0X00000500, 0X00000002, 0X821B6890, 0X8221BE08)

I have to hit the power button to shutdown or the reset button to
restart after this.

So, do I try and uninstall these updates and messenger, or is there
something else I can do?

Asus P4P800S-X, Intel P4 2.4ghtz Northwood 800fsb 512 cache, 512mb

BTW-WTF is up with this board? When does it actually work on the
microsoft site?

Here is a link to an MS Knowledge Base article:

Apparently one or more of your drivers was damaged by the sudden change
in power. See if you can get into Safe Mode and look at Event Viewer
(Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter]) to try and determine which driver is
damaged.

BTW, this is not a "board". You are probably using the web interface and
may not realize that this is really a newsgroup. You will get far more
out of this resource if you learn to use a newsreader. There are many
good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use Outlook Express since you
already have it. Here are some links to help you with newsgroups:
