Blue screen on shutdown or restart - serious problem

After updating norton anti-virus via live update, updates for symantec
product as well, I cannot restart or shutdown.
-I get the blue screen with serious error message.
-I cannot restore to another restor point
-Nortons Internet worm protection has failed and will not launch.
-Error messages sent to microsft automatically.
Everything else seems to be working ok, I have internet access and programs
appear to be running normal.

Hi Nic,

Sounds like a failed update. I would boot into Safe Mode (after seeing
the BIOS screen, press F8 repeatedly until the menu appears), uninstall
Norton, and install a AV program like AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
) or Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/ ). Both are free for
non-commercial use.

You could try reinstalling Norton again, but I think it's time to move on.

Report back,

Nic,

What is the blue screen error message. its the address before the three
memory addresses in brackets

Example:

0x0000000A (3 addresses here)

Just need that first Blue screen error

Then we can help you

Terry,

What on earth are you talking about? I would not agree with you in the
slightest.

Why install a useless free virus scanner that contains its own BHO for one
that has been paid for by the OP?

If they give the correct stop code then we can solve this problem,

You can disagree all you want, but I've experienced enough failed
updates of Norton over the years. I haven't recommended the product for
years either. And the two free programs I recommended are FAR from
useless. They are both highly rated. And it doesn't make any
difference if the OP paid for the program or not. It's not working and I
offered a way to resolve his issue.

I doubt the stop code will allow you to solve it. Removing Norton will.
I also stated that if he wanted to he could reinstall Norton after, so
I gave him a choice.

And proper methods of replying are to at least include the text of what
you're replying to. Many users have their newsreaders set to only view
unread messages and it's impossible to tell what you're talking about
without the prior post.

Please tell us which edition of Norton Antivirus you are using, or the name
and edition of the other Symantec product. There is a common workaround to
enable System Restore in certain cases.

You can forget my statement about replying. The problem is you are
using a delimiter in your sig and top posting. If you're going to top
post, it's better not to have a delimiter.
