Sharing Folder WITHOUT MS Sharing Service

Hello,

When I enable the MS Sharing Service on my Win2k server I find I am
bombarded with hack attempts. I have a firewall and am also blocking
all unused ports. It is not a Domain server...just a Stand Alone web
server. If I remove the Sharing Service - magically none of the
hackers can get in (or get close).

How can I share a folder on my 2k Server with my 5 Win2k Pro
workstations without using the MS service for sharing folders?

If there is an Open Source or simliar way that would be cool too.
This may sound funny but I am also wondering if there was something
like Secure Samba for Windows.

Thanks,

Michael

File and printer sharing bound to a connection on the inside of the firewall
has nothing to do with it. You must have a whopping big hole in your
firewall.

What is the "MS Sharing Service"? Do you mean "File and print sharing for
Microsoft networks"?

File sharing on Windows is provided be a service listed as "Server" in the
Services snapin. If you have something called "MS Sharing Service" listed
here and when you enable it you get invaded by hackers, you have to ask
yourself how this service got onto your system and what it really is.

If you have a firewall, you should not worry. Just see that all connection
attempts from Internet to your incoming LAN are dropped. Once you are sure
even turn the logs off since they tend to fill up pretty quickly.

You cant share, but you can use ftp.

There may be Secure ftp server for windows.

Thanks for posting.

Yes, my apologizes. This is the proper name.

My web server has two network cards. One to the Internet and one to
the private LAN. I have not been successful in installing the "File
and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" service so as it is only
bound to one network card.

Is it time to reinstall?
What else can you recommend please?

Thanks again,

Michael

For the NIC connected to the internet you can simply uncheck the box for
"File and Printer Sharing" Either case you still must have a whopping big
hole in your firewall.

Yep - and I'd be really worried about what's already gotten in, esp. as this
is a webserver/IIS box. Perhaps a wipe/rebuild is in order.

There's always WebDAV.
