Hi Dan,

To start with, Nad is running IPX/SPX and NetBT. The IPX/SPX binding goes
nowhere. Do you really need IPX/SPX?

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

Next, Desk-Home, while recognised by both itself and Nad as the master browser,
is either running XP Home, or XP Pro with the Remote Registry service disabled.
Or it needs NetBT Enabled. Or you DO have a firewall or anti-virus problem
(disabling any third party firewall won't always work, and AVG may have an anti
worm component that can cause problems like yours).

Ok...
I have tried several things, with no noticable success.
both computers now only have the three procribed items in the lan property
box:

client for microsoft networks
file and printer sharing for ms netowrks and
Internet protocol tcp/ip

I went through services and made sure that things were kosher there - i
turned on

routing and remote... but i didn't see a remote registry service at all.
Both computers by the way are xp home sp2.
I found the cdiag prog and ran it on the desktop with the result below, but
when i ran it on the laptop,
I got wierd stuff, 100 cmd windows and 82 notepad windows. It would start
with a memo to start the diag code, and
then print a bunch of screens with the message "the process cannot access
the file becaus it is being used by another
process" I looked through the task manager listing of processes, and idin't
see anything that was obvious to me.

AT various points during all of this i opened my network places to see if i
could open a file on one computer from the other,
with no luck in either direction. One thing that i have noticed is that the
router shows up in my network places intermittently.
If i refresh it usually comes back. used to be it wouldn't show up at all
unless the firewall on both computers were down, so something changed.

for background: the desktop jsut had the motherboard replaced, so there are
actually several ethernet adapters that show up. it also has an extra
ethernet card, which is not being used, although it does function. when i
run the network wizard, it shows that there is some disconnected
network hardware, which i just clicked on the box to ignore it. The extra
adapters are visible in the Dlink softare, but they dont show up on the
add/remove window, so i haven't gotten them uninstalled. NOt really
convinced that that is a problem, since i had the same kind of problems before
I replaced the motherboard.

also - "Or it needs NetBT Enabled." I assume that this is a service, but i
didn't find it. where do i need to look to check out NetBT?

greatly appreciate any suggestions that you might have

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

To start with, Nad is running IPX/SPX and NetBT. The IPX/SPX binding goes
nowhere. Do you really need IPX/SPX?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

Next, Desk-Home, while recognised by both itself and Nad as the master browser,
is either running XP Home, or XP Pro with the Remote Registry service disabled.
Or it needs NetBT Enabled. Or you DO have a firewall or anti-virus problem
(disabling any third party firewall won't always work, and AVG may have an anti
worm component that can cause problems like yours).
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

CDiag is a relational analysis tool. It analyses the performance of each
computer, from looking at each computer from each other computer. It is more
useful if you add two steps.
1) You need to add (replace) two lines of information, to identify the targets:
set FullTarget1=desk-home 192.168.0.130
set FullTarget2=nad 192.168.0.180
2) You need to run CDiag on both computers.
Running CDiag on one computer, with no targets, didn't do much. :(

If you're getting multiple windows, you're probably including the line
##### Start CDiag Base Code
in the cdiag.cmd file. Please DO NOT include ANY portion of the "#####" lines.

Next, using my abbreviated guide, and reading all linked articles:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html
you'd get to the Intermediate section. Step 4 goes thru essential protocols,
services, and transports (including NetBT). Step 5 goes thru extraneous
protocols and transports (including removing IPX/SPX).

Finally, as noted in my articles, XP Home does not have Remote Registry (nor
administrative access).

So try again please. Get IPX/SPX out of the setup, Enable NetBT, and let's look
at browstat and ipconfig again.

hello
I have a problem getting a network to work. I want to share and backup
files between a desktop and a laptop with a hardwire router, which attaches
to the internet. I have sygate firewalls on both computers, but when i try
to network i have had the firewalls turned off. I also have avg, but i son't
think that is ht eproblem(?)

I have ipconfig and browstat info for both computers.

Thanks so much for your patience. i think that i have got it mostly under
control.
the only problem now is that there are apparently permission issues - some
shares are available, and some arent. for curiousty i will post the deskhome
test results.

can you pooint me to wards atutorial relating to file sharing and
permissions? your articles have been very helpful, although i have to
confess i read them a little too fast the first time!

thanks and here is the test result:

thanks for any suggestions
dan

Hi Dan,

To start with, Nad is running IPX/SPX and NetBT. The IPX/SPX binding goes
nowhere. Do you really need IPX/SPX?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

Next, Desk-Home, while recognised by both itself and Nad as the master browser,
is either running XP Home, or XP Pro with the Remote Registry service disabled.
Or it needs NetBT Enabled. Or you DO have a firewall or anti-virus problem
(disabling any third party firewall won't always work, and AVG may have an anti
worm component that can cause problems like yours).
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Thanks
Dan

<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html
you'd get to the Intermediate section.

Dan,

What you have there looks clean. Both browstats show 2 computers seeing 2
computers each. CDiag for Desk-Home shows no problems. No CDiag for Nad, but
if you're happy so far let's look at file sharing. There's a link to a
referential Microsoft white paper on file sharing, in the last section.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html

And if you read my articles too fast, don't worry - they're still there. Read
them again. I do, and occasionally I rewrite something too. ;)
