sharing a printer thru the router

I have an HP 3210XI all in one printer that I would like to share on my
network thru the router via TCP/IP instead of connecting it to one of the
computers via the USB cable and sharing it thru the PC. I have a network of 3
computers - 2 are Windows XP Home SP2 and one Mac OS X Tiger connected with a
Linksys wired router. I had attempted to install the printer on the router -
the router saw the printer and assigned it an IP address. I checked to make
sure the IP address/subnet mask and default gateway were all correct (the
router lists the printer in the dhcp clients table correctly) and then tried
to locate it on one of the Windows XP machines - but couldn't find it. I
could not bring up the printer interface via the web browser, entering in the
IP address of the printer either. The Mac could not "see" the printer on the
network during installation or via the web browser. I had file and printer
sharing enabled on the Windows machines and had turned off the Zone Alarm
firewall that I was using - to no avail.

I ended up connecting it to one of the Windows PCs using the USB cable and
sharing it with the other computers that way, but I have to have that
computer on to do that - if I had it connected thru the network, I wouldn't
have to have the additional computer on to be able to print - which is what
I'd like to be able to do. I did not try to ping the printer when it was
connected, so I don't know if that would have worked or not - what do I need
to do, or what am I missing to hook this up?

I see all sorts of questions and answers but none answers my question

I have two desk top pc's sony/gateway and a canonpixma3000 printer, the
printer is connected to the gateway and I like to use the same printer for
the sony through network (which is installed)...nothing seems to work. I did
have the system set up before with the printer connected the sony and
networked to the gateway which worked fine...what am I doing wrong?

Cari,

I tried the link, but either the url has changed or it is no longer available.
Thank you for the attempt at least. :)
