Sharepoint Services not installed

I used to be able to create a new web in FP2003 with something like
http://mycomputer/myweb address. Now, for some unknown reason, the FP won't
allow me to create a new web (or open an existing one) in this manner. I
can, of course, still create a new web by creating it in
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\myweb and also open the existing ones in this manner.

When I try to create a web in the http://mycomputer/meweb manner, I get the
following message:

"An error occurred accessing your Windows SharePoint Services site files.
Authors - if authoring against a Web server, please contact the Webmaster
for this server's Web site. WebMasters - please see ther server's
application event log for more details."

First, how can I resolve this problem so I can start creating/opening in the
http manner; and second, where is this application event log stored on the
hard drive and what's the name of this file?

I have Googled on this error and apparently a lot of people are facing this
problem. However, I have yet to find a solution that works for me.

I am using Win XP Pro/FP2003.

Someone suggested to uninstall the Win SP1. I have done that to no avail.

As I said before, it used to work fine before on the same computer. I
suspect it's one of the Windows automatic update that has caused this
problem.

Under Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 Pro, IIS is limited to a single root web, you can however
create as many subwebs / subsites as needed, just by opening the root web and then creating a
folder, then select and right click on the folder, select convert to web / site.

Thomas, thanks for the reply.

I realize that only one root web is allowed. In my case, it is
http://mycomputername.

All the webs (or more technically, subwebs) I have created before are like
this http://mycomputername/myfirstweb; http://mycomputername/mysecondweb ,
and so on.

Now I can't create (or open existing subwebs/sites) any more new (sub)webs
in this manner. I have to create a new (sub)web in
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\mythirdweb.

When you say I can create as many subwebs as needed by opening the root web
and then creating a folder, do you mean opening the root web in FP or in
Windows Explorer?

Sorry if I am not able to explain myself clearly.

If you have been opening c:\inetpub\.. either via FP or Windows Explorer and making changes, then
you have most likely corrupted the server/extensions since when you open c:\inetpub\.., you are
opening the server based webs as disk-based web.

They opening your webs as http://localhost instead of the your computer name.

http://localhost/mywebname also didn't work.

Also, since the formatting of my hard drive and reinstalling of all the
programs well over 6 months ago, I have always created and opened a page as
http://mycomputername/ without a hitch. So I don't know how I could have
corrupted the FPSE.

<rant>
After searching the web high and low including the MS KB, I am beginning to
believe that no one really knows how to fix this particular problem. Not
even Microsoft. As many people have reported this problem, I have yet to
find a solution on the web. There are complaints but no one has posted a
definitive solution like "ok, uninstall the MS update # such and such, pull
out your Windows XP/FP CD reinstall this/uninstall that, run a repair,
download and install this patch, reboot and voila!" What may work for one
may not work for other because no one knows what really caused this problem.

Thomas, thanks for your help. I guess it's time to backup my files, reformat
the hard disk, reinstall the OS and all my software. I know that will solve
the problem and this time I will be extra careful about downloading a MS
security patch because I am almost certain this is what caused the problem
to start with.

Not any new ones except the automatic updates of MS antispyware, TrendMicro
AntiVirus, and installing the regularly-released Windows security patches.

But that gives me the idea of disabling all my antispyware, antivirus,
firewall, etc. Will keep you posted here.

Turning off the antivirus etc didn't help either.

I went ahead and uninstalled all the security patches, performed a repair on
my Windows XP Pro, then uninstalled the IIS from Windows component.
Rebooted, reinstalled IIS, uninstalled FP2003, rebooted, reinstalled FP
making sure SharePoint was also being installed, reactivated, yet without
any result.

Now when I try to create a new (sub)web/site in FP using
http://mycomputername/newwebname I get the error "The Web server at
http://mycomputername does not appear to have Windows SharePoint Services
installed."

Now what?

Did you download and install the latest extensions and then the update
to the extensions??

Also, when I want to create a new web in IIS, I go to computer
management, right click on Default Web,
select New and then select Server Extensions 2002 web.

When you re-installed IIS, did you select to have the FP extensions installed, these would be the
FP2000 extensions, which you would then upgrade to the FP2002 extensions.

Ok, just downloaded and installed FPSE2002. Still a no go.. :-( Says Windows
SharePoint services not installed.

Where do you go and check in your computer to see if the SharePoint is
installed or not or if by accident it has been turned off or something like
that?

I see a nice storm brewing up in this newsgroup thanks to a message by Mr.
clinton on his remark over Churchill... Guys, please don't forget me in all
the brouhaha... ;-). I really need help as I am running out of ideas now
besides formatting the hard drive.. (shudder)...

Best to make sure that IIS and the FP2000 extensions are installed and working correctly, before
installing the FP2002 extensions updates.

I've been getting the same message. I'm on a managed dedicated server
(Windows 2003) and have 3 or 4 IPs on it. I just had a new IP created and
it's the only one I'm getting these error messages on. The host has done
everything imaginable to the extensions but I still get the error. Also, the
error is sporadic. Sometimes I can publish right away and sometimes I have to
click off that error window 3 or 4 times. I still get everything published,
but the error window is aggravating. I am publishing to the IP rather than to
a domain if that matters. Thank you.

You will need to first un-install the FP2002 extensions, then the FP2000 extensions, then IIS, then
re boot the system, suggest you run scandisk and defrag, then re-install IIS with the FP2000
extensions, then under IIS MMC, select the default web, then All tasks and configure the extensions,
only after you have them working, do you then upgrade.

It shouldn't matter that you are publishing to the IP. Just need to make sure the IP is associated
with a FP web and that the extensions are configured.

Thomas, after again spending nearly two hours this morning based on your
last advise, the problem persisted. That was enough for me. I reformatted,
reinstalled etc etc and everything is working (including FP) as expected.

Thanks for your help. I think MS should address this problem in plain
English for many people like myself who are, or were, having this problem.
Microsoft should also clearly describe which security update causes this
problem so we have a choice of not installing them.

Ok, enough of ranting... now back to the Churchill discussion... very
enlightening.... NOT!
