Server error having to do with sharepoint

I can't open up any of my web sites folders. When I do, I get the following:
"Server error the URL: "C:/ . . . myweb" is not contained within a Windows
SharePoint Services site." I have never even used SharePoint. I'm not even
sure exactly what sharepoint is. I have always upload my pages using cuteftp
individually. I can open individual pages but not a whole folder.
When I open up an individual web page, it doesn't show my shared borders
either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! I'm getting despirate!
