Shared Network Drive message

Windows XP2, home network.

Computer 1 has a shared C: drive which Computer 2 has been able to
access for years. It is set up as a "connect at logon", and is
assigned drive M: Recently, this stopped working. M: appears in
explorer, but gives the Red-X message:

M:\ is not accessible.
The drive is not ready.

HOWEVER - the drive CAN be accessed by going through My Network
Places, and I've set up a new "connect at logon" assigned to drive P:,
which is working flawlessly.

Explorer now shows M: (which doesn't work) and P: (which does).

Two questions:
1) How do I remove the listing and attempted connections for M:?
2) Does anyone have any idea why/how this may have happened or what's
happening?

Thank you for your patience!

Go to Start/My Computer. On the Tools menu there is an item for
'disconnect network drive"

Thank you - I had already done that; the drive properties say
"disconnected network drive".

When you set up network drive, you're given the option to "connect at
log-on"; but I can't find a way to UNdo that. Going to
MyComputer/DisconnectNetwork Drives, two drives are displayed; my new
"P" drive, and a drive with the text:

(none)
\\othercomputername\shareddrivename\

where the logical drive letter would be.

The "P" drive is the same except that it has P: where the other has
"(none}"

Take a look at 'net use' syntax in the help and support app. You
probably want:
net use M: /delete

response is:
System error 67 has occurred.
The network name cannot be found.

net use M: /persistent:no

says that the syntax of the command is wrong - but it's exactly as
shown with net use /?

In the registry, under HKCU/Network, only P is shown.

But in HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Map
Network Drive MRU

and in .../MountPoints2

there were entries pointing to a previous (3 years back) version of
the other computer and C-drive - with the older name. I deleted those
references.

And stopped Explorer - with Windows Task Manager - and restarted it and...

! There is still a drive M: shown, but now it's a "removable disk"
possibly pointing to a flashcard slot.

My hypothesis is that plugging in an external usb flashcard reader a
few months ago somehow partially overlaid the "M" designation.

My thanks to you for your suggestions, which provoked my own looking a
little deeper into it. My next step (after hitting the send button
here) is to re-boot and see which changes decide to be permanent!

Thank you again.

OK - the M: reference as a network drive is gone.

The new P: network drive is alive and well, although it doesn't
appear in Explorer until a specifically type it into the
address/foldername window.
