Share folders between two Windows 2000 Servers.

I sat up a Windows 2000 server a couple of years ago and have been accessing
it from Win 98SE Clients with no problem. And it's been a few years since
my Win 2000 class and can find any of my manuals.

Recently I have added a second Windows 2000 server on the network and have
not been able to access the same shared folders on the first Server from the
Second server.

I have taken one Win 98 system off of the network and have replaced it with
the second server.

I am using a valid UserID and Password to attempt to long into the first
server with no luck. I can see the other systems on the network, can log
into the Win 98 machines, but not the first server. And I have not
duplicated a network user ID.

I am using a Workgroup and not a domain on this network.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

Try making a connection with the "net use" command.
If unsuccessful, please be more specific. "...with no
luck" does not tell us much!

I can browse to server one through Network Neighborhood or view the server
through Net Use. When I attempt to access the Server, it asks for the User
ID and Password. I provide a UserID and Password that has been used on the
server before (it has been setup and working for over 2 years), one that
works on a Win 98 system to access the server, but when I attempt it through
the second server, it will not give me access.

I made sure that this user and password was not already logged onto server
one.

Let's call the machine that hosts the share "Host".
Let's also give the name of "Client" to the machine
that attempts to access a share on "Host".

Now when you log on to "Client", using the account
name xxx with a password of yyy, then you must make
sure that account xxx / yyy is also defined on "Host".
If it is not then you will be challenged each and every
time.

Ok, I have a UserID (i.e. xxx) and Password (i.e. yyy) defined on my Host
with working access and rights. I can log onto the Host from any other
Client and it works.

On my Windows 2000 Client, I defined the same UserID (xxx) and Password
(yyy) defined on the Host.

I have verified I am using the same UserID and Password logging onto the
Client and attempting to logon to the Host.

When I attempt to access the Host, I get challenged for "connect as" and
"password". When I enter xxx in the connect as field and yyy in the
password field I get the message "Incorrect password or unknown username
for" and lists my Host name I'm attempting to log onto.

I rechecked my Client and show the same UserID and Password I've defined on
the Host.

I know it has to have something to do with the UserID and Password. I can
log onto my Host using my Host's Administrator ID and Password and the logon
succeeds.

Last entry. I deleted my xxx user id on my Host and recreated it with a new
account of xxx and yyy as the password. I now have access to the Host from
my Client. There must have been something corrupted in the user account
which got corrected when it was recreated.

Thank you for your time and I appreciate your help.

Windows 98 (unless set up to authenticate through a domain) usually just
displays a password prompt (not a username/password prompt). If your
accounts match (same username and password on both servers), and the
accounts have both share and ntfs permissions to access the share, there
shouldn't be any prompt at all, you should just authenticate right on into
the share.
