Shadow volume error halts backup

Hi,

I asked this question several days ago. I'm not sure
if anyone understood would I was asking, so I will
try to be more specific.

I bought an external USB harddrive for my backups on my
XP computer. The first time I backed up everything,
including the system state. For some reason, every backup
since then will not work if I select the system state.
A shadow volume copy error is returned and the backup
fails. I am doing a normal backup, replacing, not
appending each time.

Can anyone please tell me what I can do to allow the system
state to backup along with everything else????

I've run into this on 2003 servers when trying to backup system state &
Exchange in the same job. The MS recommendation was to do two backup jobs -
one for system state, one for everything else. A kluge, but it seems to
work.
