Volume Shadow Copy

Attempting to follow the prerequisites of installing SP3 I ran into a
stumbling block of not being able to back up files due to this:
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042301
Aborting Backup.
Have not found adequate info to correct this. Downloaded VSS 7.2SDK
still no help.
Hope to find some here.

Volume Shadow Copy Services is a service that must be running in order to
back up files that are "in use". With windows, even when you do nothing,
there are files being "used", so any backup that includes the operating
system must use that service.

Access:
-- Start; Programs; Administrative Tools; Services
OR
Find Administrative Services in Control Panel and start it from there.

Find "Volume Shadow Copy" in the list in the left hand pane.

Most likely, "Startup Type" column has no entry for it, where it should
contain the word Manual or Automatic in order to do backups.

Double click "Volume Shadow Copy" to see its Properties (or right click and
choose Properties).

In the Properties General tab, click Start. The service should start and
indicates it started. Just watch it for a few seconds to see that it remains
started.

Still in the General Tab, click dropdown menu "Start Type". Choose
"Automatic" from the list.
You can also set it to "Manual", but "Automatic" is better.
NOTE: Another process also depends on this service running too so if you've
had any problems with remote procedures, this could be the reason.

Close Properties.
Note that the service is running and the type is Automatic.
Close the window.
Reboot/Restart.

Go to Administrative services again and verify that the Volume Shadow Copy
still shows as running and start type is automatic. If so, you're done.

Now you should be able to do your backups properly without missing anything
that might be in use.

Let us know if that doesn't work for you; it should. BEWARE: Do not make
changes to services on your own unless you are certain of what you're doing.

Twayne

Thank you for the detailed help. I have copied it for future use. In
the meantime found a software that handles backups and will proceed
with prerequisites to d/l SP3.
