XP Pro Backup Utility Failure

I am trying to back up C drive and system state to an external usb 2.0 Lacie
HD. I keep getting the following:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "XP Backup Pre Office 2007 Install 02032007.bkf created 2/3/2007
at 6:28 PM"


Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophic failure


Aborting Backup.

Try backing up system state by itself; then everything else by itself.
