Unable to Backup Windows Folder

D

Dan

I would like to backup my "Windows Folder" using the
built-in Backup of WindowsXP (Accessories-->System Tools--

I choose "Let me Choose Folders" and guide it to the
Windows Folder. I place a check. Then tell it to back it
up to a folder in my second hardrive. It quits right away
as soon as it starts the backing. I've tried this in Safe
Mode too. This is the error I get:
----------------------------------------
Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "WinFolderBkup11_23_2003.bkf created
11/23/2003 at 5:30 PM"

Error returned while creating the volume shadow
copy:Catastrophic failure

Aborting Backup.

Same problem here. Very disappointed that no one has replied with an
answer to this. There doesn't seem to be any information about this error
in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase.

I"ve used ntbackup a lot. Always has worked. My first guess would be might
be something wrong with one of your disks. I'd try running chkdsk on both
source and target drives - using the 'recovery bad sector' option.

Thanks for the response, Frank. I doubt that it's a hardware problem.
I'm trying to backup to a folder on the C: drive which I will later burn
to a CD. I get the same error if I try to backup to a floppy.

Hi all,

So, just to double-check: the error is the one below, correct?

"Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophic
failure"

Are there any VSS-related errors in the Event Log? If yes, can you cut
& paste them in your reply? (you can use eventvwr)

Thanks, Adi

Dan/Adi,

I found a work-around for this problem.

Using the GUI, you have to use the backup wizard. Using the wizard,
you eventually get to a screen that has an "Advanced" button. Selecting
this will provide a checkbox to suppress the shadow copy.
Backup works like a charm.

If you use batch mode, you can turn off the shadow copy using the
switch: /snap:blush:ff.

As far as I know, the shadow copy is not really necessary. I think
it's really meant for backups on a network.

Hi,

0x80070422 means ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. It looks like the Volume
Shadow Copy service is disabled on your machine. This might explain
why you get these shadow copy failures in NTBackup - so it is not
necesarily to turn them off.

Please make sure that the following services are enabled on your
machine:
- Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) - should be enabled as "Manual"
- Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider (SWPRV) - should be enabled
as "Manual"
- Remote Procedure Call (RPCSS) - should be enabled as "Automatic"
- COM+ Event System (eventsystem) - should be enabled as "Manual" or
"Automatic"
- System Event Notification Service (sens) - should be enabled as
"Automatic"

Thanks, Adi

Adi,

I knew it had to be a setting on my machine. I can't believe I didn't
think of SERVICES.

Thank you!
