Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "System Backup.bkf created 04.12.2004 at 17:48"

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophic

This reply should cover both your postings, the fault with your backup is
the same despite slightly different messages. Go Start>Run and type in
msconfig. In the Services tab, tick the box to see ensure that the Volume
Shadow Service (VSS) is disabled - click Apply, OK and the system will force
a restart. On reboot, tick the "don't shw this message again" box and hit
OK. Try backing up again and repost if this doesn't cure the problem.

Did not help :-( Still get the "Volume Shadow Copy" error when backing up.
Can backup files (if I cross out for "Disable Volume Shadow Copy") but not
files in use (some windows files and registry). Ended up just making a copy
of them from Win98se (XP files are readable and can be copied from Win98)

Sorry to hear that Lars-Erik because that was my best shot. However, I've
now read a third post of yours which I hadn't seen before which says you've
already tried this fix. However, if the Registry back-up is your main
concern, why do you not simply export the Registry in the normal way
whereupon the files to which you export it will become backed up with
everything else.

To my mind, the Registry is such a moveable feast, it will hardly bear any
resemblance to its present form come the day you may need the backup. You
can always get to it through its main constituent files,
C:\Windows\System32\Config plus of course, the NT files stored in C:\My
Documents\{yourname}.
