Setup can NOT copy files...

This newer (created in the past 4 months) PC had ME on it.
I went and reformated... and tried to install XP Pro from
scratch, and during the "coping setup files" i recieve
errors. first is the Shell32.dll, then another then
another then another... it's not "coping correctly".

I thought it could have been the disk, so I tried 2 other
XP Pro CD's and still the same problem.

I then thought it was the CD-Rom drive.... switched, and
still the same problem.

Changed the IDE cable's, all ata100. still the same thing.

I installed 98, 98SE, ME, 2002 with no problems at all.
I even tried an "Upgrade" from older Windows versions...
and still, cannot copy the files.

I even tried switching from Fat32 to NTFS, and STILL the
same problem.

I took off ALL the expansion boards (has on-board video)
and only have the HDD and CD-Rom attatched. still the
same thing.

also tried changing the HDD, STILL the same...

swapped the ram with a diffrent brand even... still the
same.

I've replaced everything except the motherboard, and still
the same problem... i was thinking the IDE port on the
motherboard could be fried... but then why would all the
other O/S install fine?

Anyone have any idea what the pronblem could be?

Did you try to fill the whole HDD with 0's. My Seagate Barracuda HDD came
with such an utility - and it's available for download at their website. Of
course, it takes a few hours if you pick the "thoroughly" option.

Well, I also installed diffrent HDD's... both Maxtor and
WD... they still do the same thing...
it's like the Windows drivers arent copying correctly

thoughts?

It looks like you already tried this, but I had a similar problem as a
result of bad RAM. I hadn't had the problem prior to the install but the
sector which was bad had likely never been called before.

Another potential cause is something else I ran into. I had a MB which
allowed for 3gigs of pc2100 ram and was pc2700 compliant. What I didn't
know, was it did not allow for 3 rows of pc2700.

All of the problems caused errors similar to "The filename / image copied to
(destination) is not the same as filename / image (install CD).

Don't know if this is helpful but...
