Setting up Windows Mail on Vista

M

Mr T

I have just purchased a new desktop base PC which has Vista installed.
I am setting up the Windows Mail to receive any email through this package
rather than through my normal SKY account.
I previously did this on my old PC via Outlook express.
I have set up all the required fileds in Tools & Accounts e.g. POP3 =
pop.tools.sky.com and for outgoing smtp.tools.sky.com
and also loaded my username & password & also set the POP3 server for
imconing to 995 and out going smtp to 465 and ticket both as secure
connection.
However when I try to send/receive data from my current email account
nothing happens & I receive the following mesages:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Test 2', Account:
'pop.tools.sky.com', Server: 'smtp.tools.sky.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0B

and

Account: 'pop.tools.sky.com', Server: 'pop.tools.sky.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR not supported 25pf6326451aga.0', Port: 995,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

I also can not send any new emails from Windows Mail.

Can Microsoft help me here & has anyone esle experienced similar frustrations?

Thanks
DT

Who is your server? The server must use the same ssl code. I just changed
server and experience the same thing. My server is ATT and Att do not support
port 25 for get my outgoing mail going under my other email address beside
ATT last name.

To fix the receive error:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

The send error looks like interference from an antivirus program.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:

My case is a server problem. Att block port 25 eventhrough it is unblocked
(att claimed it.) it is still not working.... Att uses only 465 outgoing and
995 receiving.

My server is AT&T. How do you change the port?

I'd like to comment about your windows mail. I had the same problem, I fixed
it by using the same ports numbers as you did, 465 outgoing and 995 incoming
, but you have to make sure that you check the box underneath each
connection that says "This server requires a secure connection (SSL) That
seemed to have solved my problem and should solve yours too., Nettie209

Thank you for this advice. I changed the settings as per your instructions
but it still does not connect.
This time I kept getting a pop up box asking for my email user name &
password, which I keyed in everytime but still nothing & this box keeps
coming up for username & password over & over again.

The error message I now receive is:

Account: 'pop.tools.sky.com', Server: 'pop.tools.sky.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.', Port:
995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

The virus protection that I am using is the standard Norton Virus protection
that is installed with my new PC and is for a 1 month trial.
I have turned this off for incoming email & tried to receive mail again but
without any success.

Can anyone else give me any help / advice on how to get this to work.

Thanks David (Mr T)

Norton Antivirus 2008 (and earlier) is among the top three troublemakers
for Windows Mail.
First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Disabling Norton Antivirus is often not sufficient.
In a worst case scenario, you may have to uninstall Norton, followed by
using their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of overly
intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail
