setting up a server in my home network

i have 1.5 mbit and 2 computers which share the network. one of the is
beeing used to download lots of music etc, which means the other computer is
surfing slower on the net.

my isp suggested to set up a server to solve this, however someone else told
me that this wouldnt work.

any help is good help

If you are using a lot of your inbound bandwidth by from either
computer, the connection won't provide any better performance until you
stop downloading.

I'm assuming that you have a 100mbit network between the computers and
that they share a 1.5mbit internet connection, not them sharing between
each other using the 1.5mbit connection.

How are they connected to the Internet? Is one of the computer connected via
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)?

the 2 computers are connected to the internet trough wireless communication
and no ICS is used - dont even know what that is.

Leythos is right.

You could use a Server to connect through, and throtle your individual
connections, but you are looking at the COG. $$$

Either way, you are sharing a connection to the internet.
As traffic increases from one, the other, or both machines together,
your reserve bandwith decreases causing bottlenecks.
This is causing your reduced internet surfing speed.

You might want to invest in a second ISP connection, and two more NICs.
Place each computer on their own ISP connection and with the second NIC
set up a home network between the two computers; Just a thought

Then your bottleneck is the Internet. Have you considered down loading at
times when the other computer is not being used. See if you can schedule
downloads at a time you are sleeping. The only other option, apart from
separate Internet connections, is to get a faster connection.
