Well as expected it didn't work!!
Neither computer seems to be able to see each other.
When I try to view workgroup computers from the XP machine
I get "Mshome is not available. You might not have permission...
conctact system administrator (that's me!!).....etc....
The lsit of servers for this workgroup is curently not
available."
Note Mshome is not MSHOME, does case matter?
This is pretty much as it was before wehn I tried it manually..
An error I had previously on the onter w98se computer
was "failed to load internet connection wizard helper component".
This seems to be a never ending nightmare that I will never sort out.
All the diagonostics are rubbish or missing and it seem impossible
to find out what is going on.
OMG!!!! I don't believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I maanaged to get it working!!
I am not too sure how but the first thing I did way turn off my
Norton firewall thingy, however it is back on now so I
don't think it was that.
I did something else too it was in control panel->network
and internet connections->network connections-> my network places
There was a reference to UPnP devices which I clicked and it did
something which showed the network, ie the other computer.
I has not changed to "Hide icons for networked UPnP
devices" so I guess if I clicked it again it would disable the
network and put me back to where I was with no network.
But anyway it is all working really well now.
Actually I just rechecked what I had done and I could not
access the remote computer that time so I turned off norton
again and I can now access the remote machine again so it
does seem like it was Norton which was the problem not
the UPnP thing (whatever that is).
So now I think I need to figure out how to configure Norton
properly so that I can access the remote machine but still
be proteected. (Not sure if it is norton or systec).
Anyway I can just turn if off when I want to access the other
machine for the time being.
I am really impressed with it though, no more swoping drives!!!
I never though I would get it to work but finally it does.
Many thanks for your help, with the netsetup file!!!
I don't know if I would still have got it going without that help
but quite frankly I was on the verge of giving up and it gave me
a bit more confidence that it might be possible to get it working.
It was just wild thought to turn off the firewall, I thinkI had
probably tried it before unsucessfully anyway. I am not totally
sure what changes I needed to make. I think I need to backtrack
and sort out all the dozens of solutions I have tried and the sort out
the security side (not that I am too bothered about being hacked,
hackers probably have more of an interest in my computer working
than Microsoft or Norton/Symtec!!
I think I will try to conneect the other way from the other computer
and also See if I can connect to the net from it via this machine.
MAny thanks!!
