Setting Text Label to Transparent -- Desktop Icons

G

Guest

I've ticked "... drop down shadow ... desktop.." in Visual Performance as
well unticked all the Web items in Display Properties>>Desktop>>Customize
Desktop>>Web and Arrange Icons by>>Lock Web Items on Desktop. However, still
the label got a solid background.

Can you help?

Right click on desktop. Select Properties, then open Desktop tab.
Click on the Customize Desktop button, then open the Web tab.
Delete everything in the Web Pages box except, My Current Home Page.
Press OK, then Apply, and maybe OK again.
You may have to restart for settings to take effect.

There are four settings that must be configured for transparent icon background to work properly.

1. Go to Control Panel / System / Advanced Tab / Performance Section / Settings Button / Visual Effects Tab. Make sure that "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" is checked.

2. Right click the Desktop and select Arrange Icons by and make sure that "Lock Web items on desktop" is NOT checked.

3. Make sure that there is no live web content on the desktop. Right click the desktop and select Properties / Desktop Tab / Customize Desktop Button / Web Tab. Make sure that all checkboxes are cleared.

4. If you are using a desktop wallpaper, make sure that it is an image file (.jpg, .bmp, etc) and not an HTML (.htm) file.

My Current Home Page's been the only item in there.

Could be anything else?

For : LI PENG

Hi there again!

In 2 wks, this is my 2nd attempt to get msg to you; still don't see my
last post (sorry, I'm new at this group stuff). The ugly icon text
labels occurred 3 separate times for me & each time, a different
solution fixed it (I see some of those other methods listed here by
knowledgeable ppl). Wish I'd known of this group when I was trying SO
HARD to fix mine! Also, Kellys-Korner site is XLNT for all kinds of
fixes & tweaks (so simple too).

Hopefully you got it fixed but if not, I have 1 more approach to try:

By now, you must know your way blindfolded & with one arm tied behind
your back while sleepwalking, to DISPLAY PROPERTIES. Click DESKTOP
(on BACKGROUND list) Select NONE. Click OK. May have to restart Windoze to take effect (tho probably not).

If that alone doesn't fix it: Return to Display Props & select a
solid color background----or may try selecting more than 1 (1 at a
time), closing Display Window to save change after each.

Tell me, PLEASE....when you CHANGE BACKGROUND COLOR(S) in Display
Props, does the background color of your desktop icon text labels also
change to that same color? IF SO, that's what gave me the final
clue that led to a fix (boy, was I happy!).

Btw, Li Peng....Dell phone support techs & others insisted I must have
a VIRUS in my brand new PC causing this. But no one actually
suggested any other possibilities existed to try 1st (such as on this
list)----They went straight to the worst case: Virus attack! Plus
no amount of scanning w/ multiple progs turned up any malware.

I suppose It IS possible you may have a virus if nothing else works, so
do consider that, too. If virus then any other oddities such as
missing 'resize' or 'move' cursor(s)? I had that the 1st time but,
turned out, my taskbar was locked (aahaha!). Last year the PC was
new & I was new to PCs.... Funny thinking of that now;-).

Wish you the best! And please please let me (& group) know exactly
WHAT WORKS for you, including IF THIS DOES NOT WORK, okay? There's
going to be an answer.
(PS: Don't give up!)

Hi...

Tho it's been a few weeks, anyone heard back from "Li Peng" to learn
what worked or didn't work to fix the highlighted or darkened desktop
icon text labels background? Curious to see what, if anything,
eventually worked. Thanx.
