I inadvertedly installed an active web link on my desktop
and when I deleted it my icons lost their transparent
background and I am now unable to retrieve them. I have
tried the advice to

1. Open Control Panel
2. Double-click System
3. Select the Advanced tab, and click the Settings button
under Performance.
4. Make sure that on the Visual Effects tab, the option
Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop is
selected.

And right-click the desktop, point to Arrange Icons By
and make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-
checked, nut neither work

Any different ideas?

Try Registry First Aid or Norton SystemWorks to clean it
out of the registry automatic. No guarantee, but they
cleaned a lot on my little and big problems easily.
