Setting a default font for Outlook2003

How do you set a default font type and size in Outlook 2003? Every time I
want to type an email, it always defaults to Arial, 10 pt. I want it so that
when I send an email, it will default to Times New Roman, 12pt. Can anyone
help me out?

Thanks,

Jim

When I follow those directions, I try to send a new email, and the default
continues to be a beige like color which you cannot see when you type. How do
I get Outlook to default to a font that I can see?

What did you set the color to for your default font? Are you using any stationery? Do you get different results if you turn Word as your editor off or on?

HI Sue:

I've been fighting this for a while now with no success. YES!!! I've tried
the font settings there - in fact they show as being what I want, but Outlook
STILL defaults to Arial black 10 pt in new messages! GRRRRRRRRRRR

Also.... when I create signatures, I get access to the custom colors panel
and the color I select is saved with the signature, however, I CAN NOT get
access to the custom colors panel in the Tools | Options | Mail Format set
up.

Can you assist??

Thanks,
Cheryl

Are you using Word as your editor or the built-in Outlook editor? Do you see different behaviors depending on the editor in use?

WIth regard to the custom colors panel for the signature, please provide the exact steps needed to reproduce the problem.

Hi Sue:

I've been using the built-in Outlook editor. Upon receiving this reply, I
turned on the Word editor and tried to create a message. That got me a whole
host of problems I didn't have before, so I've gone back to the built-in
outlook editor.

Second... the problem with the custom color is NOT with my signature. My
signature is fine. My problem is that I can't use any custom colors (I don't
even get the option of selecting a custom color) when I select fonts in
either the in the "Tools | Options | Mail Format" method or when I create a
new message or reply to a message from outlook.

Let's take the second problem first. What happens when you try this:

1) Type some text into the body of HTML or RTF message (not plain text, of course).

2) Select the text you just typed.

3) Choose Format | Font.

4) Under color, select Green, then click OK

5) Again, select the text you just typed.

6) Choose Format | Font.

7) Under Color, click the button next to the color drop-down list.

Now, let's try to get a clearer picture of the default font issue (which I cannot duplicate here on Outlook 2003). Do you have any stationery set as the default in Tools | Options | Mail Format? What font are you trying to set?

Hi Sue:

Yes, it does change the color. My question is how do I get the custom
colors? All I get is the drop down list of the standard colors. When I
create a signature, I can choose from custom colors and I want one of THOSE
as my default color.

Hi Sue:

I solved it! I went into Tools | Options | Mail Format - then fonts and
told it to "always use my fonts".. so font issue resolved!

Now if I can just get the custom color I want.. happy camper!!!

What happens with Step 7?

Yes, Step 7. It sounds like you completed only Steps 1-4 of the test I suggested. It's still in the quoted text below.

Whenever I exit Outlook I lose my font for 'composing and reading plain
text'. The font reverts to Courier. Each time I open Outlook I must reset to
the font I want it to default to.
Any ideas?

I also tried Sue's solution and it did not work for me! I have tried fixing
it in Tools/Options/Mail Format and also in Word Tools/Options/General/E-Mail
Options.

Can anybody help!?!?

That's going to be hard, since you didn't provide the kind of information that the previous poster did: what version of Outlook you're using, whether you're using Word or the built-in editor, if you have default stationery configured, your exact symptoms.

I am also using Outlook 2003 and I am using Word and I am not using
stationery. My exact symptoms are that I change the font settings (in both
of the places that I mentioned in my post) and every time I exit out of
Outlook and go back in to compose a new email, it is back to Arial 10pt black.

Sue:

To attempt to clarify my problem.

I am using Gills Sans as my default font. Font isn't the problem, nor is
the font size. I've got those set.

My problem is that I want to set a CUSTOM color as DEFAULT in my Tools |
Opetions |Mail Format. I can use any of the standard colors, but it does not
give me the options of custom colors in that menu.
