Services in Administrative Tools ALL "disabled"

I made a scan from my Canon Multipass and emailed it. Immediately after that
I got pop up error messages saying the printer wasn't working. Next none of
the services in my Windows XP Professional would work either. Not the Restore
function, not the Help and Support; nothing.
As a last ditch effort I went into Administrative Tools and checked
Services. I found virtually 98% of all the services marked disabled.
Painstakingly, I went into each Servive and changed 'disabled' to automatic,
rebooted, and now everything is working again.
What can possible cause Windows XP professional, Administrative
Tools/Services to all turn themselves off? I would not have thought
something like a printer/scanner program could wield so long an arm into the
marrow of XP. If anyone knows what might have happened, I'd be grateful to
know.
Thanks.

I found the same situation on a customer's computer that was loaded with
viruses and spyware. I have no idea if the bugs did it or whether it was
something done in the attempt to fix things before I got the computer.

Hi, D. Currie, and thanks for replying.
In the case of my machine, it is constantly being monitored for viruses,
etc. by AVG's excellent, constantly updated, monitoring. And in the case of
spyware, etc. I have two programs that I keep track of those pests, Spybot
SD, and Spyware Blaster. So, in my case, anyway, I do not believe that
viruses or any form of spyware was the cause.

Thanks again for replying, and maybe this info from me will help you in the
future if it ever comes up again.

Ramesh,
Thank you for your reply.

I don't believe that either a virus or spyware of any sort was the cause
because I am very maticulous and daily about running Spyware Blaster and
Spybot in the case of spyware (nothing came up as having infiltrated my
machine either before or after this event). And I run AVG virus protection
which is an excellent program, constantly updated and protecting every
facet of my machines OS, the internet and my Outlook email program.
I run a thorough scan of the entire machine additionally before shutting
it off at night. And again, my AVG found no virus, etc. either before OR
after this event.

If you have any other ideas about what might have happened, I'd be
grateful. And thank you, again for taking the time to write.

Ramesh,
Thank you, too, for the terrific links, like the default services settings.

Ms. Max. :^)

There are spyware programs that can turn off the antispyware programs, just
as there are viruses that can turn off the AV programs. No matter how
careful you are, something could sneak in. It's not a bad idea to run an
online scan once in a while, just to see if there's anything hiding.

Thank you! I'll make a practice of doing the occassional online scan.
I appreciate your time.
