Hi Bill,
This error message may caused by Adobe Reader application, try to uninstall
Adobe and reinstall it again and see if the issue will be resolved and the
Error message will go away.
another cause also when you start up disk management mentioned in this
article:

My system is unable to boot up and am not able to uninstall Adobe.

I am also unable to boot up using safe mode.

I did, however, run a hardware diagnostic on my hard drive and did find a
seek error. I am not trying to figure out how to run chkdsk from ms dos (or
pc dos). Any suggestions on how I may be able to run a chkdsk where I could
repair the failing sector?

Hi Bill,
Try to start in DOS command Prompt line and type chkdsk C:/f to run the
chkdsk on your HD.
On how to use the Command line chkdsk switches read this article:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dos_diffs.mspx?mfr=true

If no joy try to connect this HD to another computer have the same OS like
your's and RUN the CHKDSK from there on it and then put it back on your
computer and boot up.
HTH
please let us know.
