Services.exe crashes after Windows Update on 5 different Dell PCs

I work for a college that uses almost exclusively Dell hardware, ranging from
GN+'s to GX1's to GX150's to Latitudes and so on. In the past two months,
we've had a very strange problem pop up:

We were originally setting up new Latitude D610 laptops for use within the
college. We had one, then two, then three of these pop up with a "Services
and Controller App has encountered a problem and needs to close" message
after exactly 60 minutes of use.

After sending the error report, we recieve a "This system is shutting down
....... Time before shutdown : 00:01:00" message. The error code reported is
ALWAYS "The system process 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe' terminated
unexpectedly with status code -1. The system will now shut down and restart."

Originally, this was only on identical D610 laptops. We went through a few
rounds of support calls with Dell and with the company providing an image
management system that was being used on all of these laptops.

We had a fourth D610 laptop crash with an identical message after simply
loading Windows XP Pro SP2, McAfee antivirus, and then all available Windows
Updates. Once again, 60 minutes, and BOOM, same error. We circumvented the
crash on THAT laptop by uninstalling all utilities for the Intel PRO wireless
adaptor, leaving only the drivers installed.

Three weeks later, we had the same symptom occur on a Latitude L400, PIII
700 mhz, manufactured in 2001. Once again, we had loaded just a base
installation of Win XP Pro SP2, McAfee antivirus, Office 2003, and then ran
all Windows Updates. 60 minutes, and crash. We used System Restore to remove
the Windows Updates, and the system worked perfectly.

We just had a similar crash - same message, same error code, also after 60
minutes - on an OptiPlex 170L desktop, with a Pentium 4 2.8ghz. Also Win XP
SP2, with the updates just run last Wednesday.

One of two error messages, this one from the Dell 170L, we've been getting
is as follows:

" services.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x606cbaf2" referenced memory at "0x00000028". The
memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
[OK] [Cancel] "

This is on a machine w/ Error Reporting turned off. The other machines have
E.R. turned on, and just get the "send error report"/"don't send" dialog box.

Does anyone have further information on these crashes, or which update could
be causing it????

Any guidance is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
