Service Pack 2 access is denied error

When attempting to install Service pack 2 following a Windows XP repair I get
the familiar Access denied error, but a different? cause from earlier posts

Several HKCR registry keys could not be backed up but in desparation I
clicked ignore to get the install started.

I looked in SVpack.log and found the following messages immediately prior to
the access denied message

DoRegistryUpdates:SetupInstallFromInfSection Failed for
ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install error: 0x5
1481.235: INF_REGISTRY Failed
1481.235: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed
1487.704: Unregistration of sprecovr successful
1487.704: Access is denied.

Any tips to fix this?
