Windows XP Home Update tells me to install SP1 for
security reasons. I have tried 4 times to do so, but each
time when the download is in the process of backing up
files it locks up the computer at WAB32RES.DLL. Can
someone tell me what to do to correct the problem (in the
very simplest and detailed way, please--I'm not very
knowledgeable)? Thank oyu.

Instead of using the express form of SP1, try using the
network form. This will download the full service pack
to your disk, and then you can install it from there, even
while disconnected from the network.
