Service Pack 1 Setup Error

Dan

My problem is with the XP critical update which
continually fails to load.

==========================================
The update in question is :
Windows XP Service Pack 1

Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) provides the latest
security, reliability, and performance updates to the
Windows XP family of operating systems. Windows XP SP1 is
designed to ensure Windows XP platform compatibility with
newly released software and hardware, and includes updates
to resolve issues discovered by customers or by
Microsoft's internal testing team. The maximum download
size is approximately 30 MB, however the size of the
download and time required may be less for computers that
have had updates previously installed. To minimize the
download time needed for installation, setup will only
download those files which are required to bring your
computer up to date. Windows XP SP1 includes Internet
Explorer 6 SP1. Anti-virus software programs may interfere
with the installation of Windows XP SP1. Please disable
anti-virus software while installing the service pack.
Microsoft recommends installing SP1 because it includes
many of updates to help keep your computer secure. Once
you have installed the service pack you should check back
for additional updates.

Typical download times for the Express installation:
All 32-bit Platforms: 30 MB | 1.25 hours @ 56K | 3 minutes
@ T1

System Requirements
Before beginning an installation of Windows XP SP1, take
note of the following system requirement considerations:

Operating system You can install SP1 only on computers
running Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home
Edition.
Disk space The recommended space requirements depend on
how the Windows XP SP1 is installed. The space
requirements are the same whether you install from the
stand-alone Service Pack CD or from this Web site, but are
different if you install from a network distribution
share. For details, read the Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB)
Article Q326583, "Hard Disk Space Requirements for Windows
XP Service Pack 1" in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
For more installation recommendations and additional
information about Windows XP SP1, visit the Windows XP SP1
Web site. (This site is in English.)

Only way to fix the problem is to perform a repair install
using a legitimate "full version" XP Pro CD and Product Key.
Afterward, visit the Windows Update web site to download
all the critical patches and updates.

I attempted the same download 11/02. My computer now will
not start Windows XP, therefore I cannot restore to
earlier version. This download is dangerous in my opinion.
My cd-rom doesnt work either so I am looking at taking to
shop to have fixed, thanks Microsoft. Any suggestions?

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Choose "Last known good..." at the menu.

If that fails, perform a Repair Installation.
Repair Installation:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,
Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.

Try installing Windows XP Service Pack 1a this way:
***PRINT THIS LIST***
Do not use Express Installation.
You can order Service Pack 1a CD from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/ordercd.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsxp/servicepacks/sp1.asp
Or:
Download the Network Installation from here: (be sure to select the
correct language)
Also select "Windows XP Professional and Home Edition" Do NOT select
64 bit.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/
DSL takes about 20 minutes, if you do not have high speed access, get
a friend to D/L SP1a for you.
Then burn it to a CD and keep for the future.
It is best to resolve current issues BEFORE installing SP1a.
First check to make sure you have all updated drivers.
You should have at least 2gb free space (Less than half that is needed
for SP1a, but if you are that close, you need to start looking for
ways to free space or add another hard drive.)
Check with computer manufacturer to insure compatibility with SP1,
there are a few models where the company has said wait while the
manufacturer implements a fix.
Compaq and HP are 2 that I know of.
If you have HP or Compaq computer contact them before installing SP1a:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph07866.html#P1_65
There may still be issues with the HP/Compaq fix, so you may want to
wait
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)
If you ever installed XP-Antispy, it disables a dll SP1a needs, so
just in case, Start - Run and run
regsvr32 licdll.dll
regsvr32 regwiz.dll
Run chkdsk to check file system.
Perform Disk Cleanup (all boxes checked except Compress old files)
Perform Disk Defragmentation.
Ensure correct date and time.
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, scanner, printer etc)
When you are ready:
Create a Restore Point in System Restore
Go to MSCONFIG, make note of what is checked in Start-Up tab then
uncheck all in Start-up tab.
Reboot the computer
Login as an Administrator, disable ALL unnecessary applications
including antivirus.
Do NOT touch any keys during the process unless necessary.
Install SP1a by double clicking on it, follow the prompts.
After SP1a install is completed, reboot, defrag.
Go back to MSCONFIG and recheck what you unchecked.

Then:
Be sure to check for other Critical Updates when finished.
