So far, auto update has not downloaded SP1. Should I download manually or
wait for the auto?

I am running Vista Ultimate 32, SP1.
I got SP1 through Windows Update.
What more can I say?

Just that you don't have one of the zillion counterindications mentioned in
KB Article ID 948343.

;^)

Here's something interesting. For the past few days, SP1 has been offered
through WU, and when I hit "install," is installs and then restarts the PC.
On the screen, it goes through "1 of 3, 2 of 3, and 3 of 3." Once it hits
100% in the "3 of 3" session, I get this message stating that "SP1 failed to
install and it was reverting back to the original configuration." What is
this all about? Thanks.

When I look at the website for the update, it says not to download the stand
alone for a single computer. When I check updates, it is not offered, and I
can't identify with any of the issues in the first link that you offered.
All of my drivers are up to date, no other lingering updates, I see no ref
to Vista SP1 being installed (only Office Suite 2007 SP1), and no blocking,
or 3rd party software.

Microsoft's idea of what the idiot Frank calls the world's best OS.

You actually may have done yourself a favor. I installed SP1 without
problems about a week ago. Since then I now have three new issues I
didn't before installing SP1, so my system actually is in worse shape
after wasting about 40 minutes downloading and installing the crap.

SP1 also without asking of course undoes several internal settings I
had fixed that caused other issues. Typical of Microsoft.

1. Vista now refuses to run my spelling checker that ran perfectly
before SP1. At boot it gives the usual bullshit that it needs
to shut down the application. Odd, it didn't before, nothing
changed except the sh*t Microsoft added via SP1.

2. Vista now refuses to open some Excel spreadsheets, claiming they
are already in use (they're not) but stupid old Windows thinks
they are.

3. I now get frequent Com Surrogate errors trying to play media files.
Again, they played fine prior to SP1, now while they play with
any player other than the load of crap called Microsoft's Media
Player since I have major file types associated with Media Player
unless I tell it to use something else I get a very annoying
Com Surrogate error. Worse as is so typical of Microsoft crap you
can drill down in internal settings and tell Vista to ignore
flagging media files Media Player has trouble with which is
suppose to override the warning, but you guessed it... Vista the
load of crap it is just ignores the settings and pops a error
anyway.

The BIGGEST problem with Vista is the same damn problem Windows ALWAYS
had. It simply does not listen and won't do what you tell it. Changing
settings is a best a crap shoot. Vista without asking or any kind of
warning often changes settings of all kinds back to their defaults.

Suggestions welcome!!

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

The problem is Windows has been broke since it's introduction in 1983
and it hasn't been REALLY fixed yet. Experienced computer users KNOW
that is a factual statement, while the Microsoft butt kissing squad is
simply too stupid to get it and remain in denial.
