sent email status

Is there a way to determine if a sent email has been read
by the recipient? Is there a way to format this. I used
to have aol, and was able to determine the status.

I Outlook Express you can go to Tools >> Options >> Receipts and check the
box at the top "Request a Read Receipt for all sent messages" However, as
you see on that same tab, recipients can set THEIR email app to "Never Send
a Receipt" in which case you won't get one.
