sending faxes

Two weeks ago I could send faxes, today I can't. PC Doctor says it failed
test 2911-203. How do I correct this problem?

That's *all* that PC Doctor said? PC Doctor didn't even tell you what
"it" was?

See

However, I wouldn't put much stock in PC-Doctor. I have an old version
of PC-Doctor and ran the modem test (my modem works fine, btw, both to
send and receive fax and data). PC-Doctor reported that every test
failed (2911-203 is the "Fax Command Test"). And when I clicked to see
the test log, it turned out that PC-Doctor claimed that it was unable to
find the modem (notwithstanding that I heard the dialtone and the
dialing tones as PC-Doctor commanded the modem to dial some number).

So ... try this instead.

Open Device Manager (right click "My Computer"; select "Properties";
select "Hardware" tab; click "Device Manager").

Confirm that there is *no* yellow exclamation point next to the "Modems"
entry.

Expand the entry for "Modems" by clicking the + to its left. Right click
on your modem and select "Properties". Click the "Diagnostics" tab.
Click "Query Modem".

Copy (manually, unfortunately) and post here the responses to the
following commands that appear in the box under "Command" and
"Response". Don't bother with the modem log at this point.

ATQ0V1E0 (should be "Success")
AT+GMM
AT+FCLASS=?

1. Std modem failed to respond. "make sure the interrupt for the port is
properly set.
2. AT+FCLASS=? Command Not Supported
3. AT14 bUILT ON 5/6/2002

Now what?

D

Dick

Let me try this again..... STANDARD MODEM "failed to respond. If internal
(yes) verify the interrupt for the port is properly set."

GTW V.92 Voicemodem

ATQoV1E0 Success
AT+GMM H.324 videoready rev. 1.0
AT+FCLASS 0,1,2,2,0,8
AT#CLS=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT14 Built on 5/6/2002 19:13:09

Now what do I do?

What did you do between the two reports? Did the "failed to respond"
message come up even though the modem responded with the info you reported?

Based on your first post, I would have said that you need a new modem.
Based on the second, the modem looks to be working properly. In
particular, the line "AT+FCLASS 0,1,2,2,0,8" means that the modem is
reporting that it is capable of fax transmission.

If you still can't send faxes, explain in as much detail as you can what
happens when you try.

The difference in the two reports is that I failed to report the entire test
info. Ini the second report I did.
When I try to fax I get a dial tone, then it starts dialing but stops
after 5 or six numbers and then I get about six beeps. The operator comes on
and says "If you are trying to make a call, please hang up and dial again."
Some where or somehow I'm losing the connection. All wires appear in place.

From what you describe, the modem is doing just what its supposed to do. It
picks up the line, dials a phone number, then produces CNG tones (the beeps
you hear that are there to tell the receiving end that a fax is to be sent)
while its waiting for the other end to answer. The operator announcement
indicates a problem with either the touch tones the modem is producing or
the phone number dialed. How do you have your phone numbers stored? Odd
things can happen if the numbers are not entered in Canonical
(International) format:

Windows XP-based and Windows Vista-based computers

The machine never completes the series of numbers before the operator cuts
in, maybe 5 or 6. The numbers are from the address book that I used in the
past to send faxes. I tried manual inserting the numbers using the method you
suggested...that didn't work either. It dialed four numbers before it
sounded like a truck backing up, and then...Ms. Operator. It's frustrating.

This sounds like a defective modem. Any chance you could get/borrow another
one?

It's an internal. Would it do any good to uninstall and reinstall the fax
program (if I find out where it is)?

I doubt it, it sounds like XP Fax is happy with the modem, but the modem
isn't getting along with the phone line. Adding/removing Fax is done from
'Control Panel|Add/Remove programs|Add/Remove Windows Components'. As to
the "Standard" modem from the other post, that would probably be done from
'Control Panel|Phone and Modem Options' where you can add a modem.

If it's not the modem, what can be the trouble? And which modem does the fax
use to communicate?
