Send To extension error message

R

Robert M Jones

x posted to windowsxp.general and also windowsxp.help_and_support
Win XP Home - user account
When using the right click SendTo extension, and selecting a file and
then navigating to the destination folder and selecting the Move File(s)
command, I get the error message "Failed to set Data for `1', if I ok
that error box, I am left with the Send To destination folder window
open and all the buttons greyed out. If I then click the close x button,
I get the error message `Failed to set data for `Pathbar' and I can't
then get anywhere without closing the `Send To'Application in Task Manager.

I have write priveliges in both the source and destination folders and I
can complete the same move operation with simple copy/paste.

Any hints as to how to solve this most welcome. Thanks.

And in microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics, but Message is no longer available
on the server.

Copy To and Move To dialog boxes list box is grayed out

Symptom
When you choose Copy To or Move To option from the Edit menu in a folder,
the Copy To / Move To dialog appears, but the list box might be empty. As a
result drives, folder and other namespace objects are not visible to the
user.

Resolution
This happens due to a missing registry key responsible for Shell Name Space
ListView. To resolve the problem, type this command from Start, Run dialog
and restart Windows:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

Many thanks - I'll try that.
The post in the xp basics group didn't get a reply over a couple of days
so I assumed I'd chosen the wrong group, cancelled it, and then x-posted
to the two groups mentioned. I was trying to avoid "multiple posting".

What is correct procedure if a single post in one of these groups
doesn't get a reply and I want to try a couple of different groups? It's
not easy to choose between the xp basics, the xp general and the xp
help_and_support group and I try and avoid x posting if possible!

Sorry - I did that in my Admin account, but that hasn't made any difference.

In my user account I right click a file, choose "Send to..." from the
right click options I select and click on "Any Folder" - I get a box
entitled Send Files To... with my drives/partitions in it - at that
stage the buttons on the bottom of the window are Cancel - and the
greyed out ones - Other... Move File(s) - Copy File(s). If I click
Cancel at this stage the error message is "Failed to set data for
`Pathbar' "

If I navigate to one of the drives/folders, then ALL the buttons become
useable, but the navigation is one way - downwards, with no back/up
options. From this stage clicking on any of the bottom row buttons is
followed by "Failed to set data for `1' " - at this point there is no
way out except Task Manager/end process (SendTo)

Bit more info. In my Admin account this all works fine and the Send To
dialog box has a proper navigation toolbar at the top with various path
options. In my user account the Send To dialog box has NO navigation
toolbar - just the single blue window title bar
So I presume it is something to do with the way the SendTo extension is
set up in my system. It isn't working in User accounts.

When I went upstairs to head to bed, I noticed that I had left the kitchen
and dining room lights on, so I went to turn them off and noticed the book I
had been reading, half a glass of warm tea and a pitcher of warm tea. It
was then I remembered that I was going to go down to the den for a couple of
minutes. Three hours later.... :0)

You could have made a reply to the original post stating that you were going
to post else where. A lot of the folks that hang around basic hang around
help and support and general.

Robert,

Send To | Any Folder is not a normal option in XP. Have you added Windows
95 Powertoy Send to X? Or Windows 98 Send To Any Folder PowerToy?

If Windows 95 Powertoy, see this from David Candy to make it work...
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize/msg/3d925773ccda0ee9

I have since remembered it was a third party addon ! - but I have
uninstalled it, played with win95 power toys, uninstalled those, and now
managed to find something in the Kellys Korner site you sent me to - but
another 3rd party one. That too only seemed to work on the Admin account
I installed it on but I've copied the contents of SendTo folder to the
other users, and the SendTo extension seems now to have the working
options I want.

I'm still learning with regard to getting stuff installed by Admin to
work in User accounts as I have only been using XP a few weeks.

Thanks for your help. Hope you got to bed on time this evening!
