problems with error messages relating to clicked urls

I have been trying to deal with error messages when I click urls and
internet shortcuts. The error messages are followed by the actual
completion of the action that the error message says it can't do -
launching of Firefox.

Firefox is my default browser
I get the error message
Windows cannot find `http://.... ' Make sure you have typed the name
correctly
when I click on a desktop shortcut to a website.

When I click on a url in an email I get the
Locate Link Broswer error message - I have followed the prompts and
navigated to Firefox.exe. I now don't get that message, but I get two
instances of Firefox opening when I click on an email.

In my Mailwasher program when I click on a url I get error message
Mailwasher could not point the web browser at the link http://.....

I googled on the "locate link browser" error and applied the solution
suggested (in an
XP admin account) using Folder Options - File Types and clearing the DDE
check box.
I have done this for the various file types suggested including url -
hyper text transfer protocol, also the ftp protocol, and Internet Shortcut.
This works but doesn't stick - if I restart or logoff/logon the error
messages return.

I have also tried swapping over the default browser, making IE7 default
browser, then reverting again to Firefox as default.

I can't get the fixes to "stick except for the one relating to urls in
emails.

This has only just started to happen but I am not sure what got changed.
Obviously something is confused about default browsers.
Any further advice welcome.

Just to add that the fix relating to unchecking the DDE box in Folder
Options - File types - doesn't stick - the box reverts to checked next
time I look.

Seem to be able to solve this by disabling Google toolbar!
