Send/receive only working on startup

I've got a problem with Windows Vista mail. I have 2 accounts set up
(correctly), but the software will only run a send/receive once when it
starts up. After this emails will sit in the outbox but won't send until the
software is shut down and restarted.

Settings are: Send/receive on startup, Send/receive every 5 minutes, and
Send immediately.

Antivirus software is AVG, but email checking is switched off.

Click on Tools, then Accounts. For each email account, click on
the account, then Properties. If there is no check mark in the box
before Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing,
click on this box any then Apply. Click on OK. After the last
account, click on Close.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that these were also checked. The system will
only do a send/receive once on application startup, and not at all when
trying any of the options within the send/receive dropdown.

I should also mention that there are no error messages. When send/receive is
clicked, nothing happens at all, not even the status window appears.

I've been using, administering and fixing computers and software for over 15
years now, and I can honestly say that Windows Vista is the most problematic
version of the lot... possibly with the exception of Windows ME.

The symptom you describe is almost always caused by an incompatible
antivirus, usually Norton or McAfee. You might try uninstalling AVG,
as a test to see if it makes a difference. If not, there are two elaborate
procedures that may help:

1) Reset Windows Mail: see
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
and scroll down to the section "How to Backup and Reset Windows Mail"
This will correct any data-related corruption.

2) To correct non-data corruption, do a Vista repair-install, see
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

However, if it was me, I would simply upgrade to the newer
Windows Live Mail program: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

I use AVG and Vista mail worked fine, until I had a replacement harddrive
installed by Dell this week. Now I have exactly the same problem Taz_etc
has. Same account settings that used to work.
- New mail received with no error on startup of Mail.
- Send immediately is checked in options and mail goes out fine.
- Send/Receive does nothing.
- Automatic checking for mail every 5 minutes does nothing.
- If I click the drop down on Send/Receive and do receive all, everything
works.
- Drop down for Send all does not work.

If it stil doesn't work, and you used the standard install for AVG, it may
help to uninstall AVG and then do a custom install where you tell it to
leave
out the part that scans email:

Hi Gary,

Thanks, I'll try those today.

One thing I've noticed with similar threads is the suggestion that this is
related to the antivirus program. I understand the point of this, but if this
is the case, why would windows mail be able to send/receive on startup? It
doesn't make an awful lot of sense.

Mind you, it doesn't make an awful lot of sense that Microsoft decided to
chuck away a perfectly good program (Outlook Express) and bring in a new one.
Why fix what isn't broken?

The antivirus problem can have strange symptoms.
We have learned over the past ten months that when strange
symptoms are present, it is almost always caused by a non-
compatible antivirus.
