Self-Extracting .cab file

I've had to recently reinstall Win XP Home. Since that time I canno
install many of the Win XP critical updates. I get a message statin
there was a problem with the self-extracting cab. In addition I've
noticed that I cannot install some software programs with the .ex
file. I've narrowed this last problem down to SP 1a - if I remov
that update, I can install programs I could not install with th
update installed. I can also install more of the critical update
but not all by removing SP 1a

Any ideas?
