Self Extracting Cab Had to Close

I had to reinstall Win XP Home the other night. With SP 1a
installed, I could not install most critical updates and also
could not install .exe files to install software. I tried reinstalling
SP 1a and same problems but this time there were
also a couple of other updates that I had to uninstall to be
able to install .exe files from other software.

I can install software now, but I cannot install many of the
WinXP updates. I get a message saying
the self-extracting cab had a problem and had to close.

Any suggestions?
